Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells typically caused by exposure to the sun’s harmful rays. Skin cancer comes in many forms, but if it is caught early, can be a highly treatable condition.

At Southern Illinois Dermatology, we can diagnose and treat various types of skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma.

Treatments

Our treatment options are just as varied as the many conditions our offices support. We take pride in tailoring each intervention and care plan to the unique needs of each patient. In general, our options for dermatologic interventions may include:

  • Medications
  • Dermatologic procedures
  • Dermatologic surgery
  • Ultraviolet Light Therapy
  • Superficial Radiation Therapy
  • Laser Treatments
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Other minimally invasive approaches

After meeting with one of our providers, they will explain their specific treatment recommendations so you can understand your options and how they plan to address your needs.

Superficial Radiation Therapy

Southern Illinois Dermatology offers Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) using the industry-leading technology of GentleCure’s Image-Guided SRT. GentleCure is widely regarded as the gold-standard approach for skin cancer treatment. SRT is a type of radiation that uses low levels of X-ray energy to kill skin cancer cells.  If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, our Southern Illinois team will walk you through the process of reviewing your diagnosis, discussing your goals for treatment, and determining if GentleCure SRT is right for you.

Preventative Care

Even if you don’t have any immediate symptoms, regular visits with your dermatologist can help to detect potential concerns early or prevent future issues altogether. Preventative care includes a skincare routine including protecting your skin from the sun and other harmful elements, routine checkups and skin screenings, diagnostic tests and risk factor awareness. Depending on your unique personal or family medical history, your physician will recommend one or a combination of these preventative approaches.
